The European herring gull has a gray back and upper wings and a white head and underparts.
The wingtips are black with white spots which are known as "mirrors."
The bill is yellow with a red spot and it has a ring of bare yellow skin around the pale eye.
The legs are usually pink, but can be yellowish. They are the most abundant gulls along the shores of Western Europe and are found in Northern Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic states. While I was in Kinderdijk, Netherlands I had an opportunity to view a herring gull pecking at and eating a fish.
It was also aggressively chasing off other birds that were also interested in the fish.
